Hier nog even een review van FERETRUM LP Pure evil - 94% Drowned, September 6th, 2009 After two mediocre demo tapes, Feretrum returned to the studio to record their sole full-length album. The result was "From Far Beyond" - a cassette-only release available exclusively in Spain and limited to a ridiculous number of copies. It was nearly impossible to find already in 1992, and who knows how many copies still exist today. I was fortunate enough to acquire a dub from an original cassette a few years back, and what came out of my speakers that day was not at all what I was expecting. The previous demos may as well be forgotten because this does not even sound like the same band. Uninspired filler riffs have been all but replaced by sinful melodies of epic proportions, and what once was a wimpy, thrash-like guitar tone is now tuned low enough to excavate the fucking tar pits. Everything has just been taken to extremes here and the sheer ferocity of the presentation is astounding. From the moment the first riff of 'Carnal Destruction' seeps into your ears, it becomes perfectly clear that Feretrum are through pussyfooting and have firmly secured their seat in the pits of hell. It was time to wipe the slate clean and start fresh, and the outcome is a collection of occult death metal that is the embodiment of pure evil. 'Euthanasy' is the only song here that has been re-recorded from the demos, but the new version is so massive that it makes the old one sound like speed metal. Influences of early Entombed and Morbid Angel are prevalent in the music, particularly on the tracks 'Internal Decomposition' and 'Chaotic Homily' where aggressive tremolo riffs and fast thrash beats lead the way to damnation. Songs like 'Usurpation of Souls' and the title track introduce doom-like elements to the musical canvas with a slower tempo and tasteful use of gloomy synth effects and acoustic guitars. The production is raw and has its share of blemishes to the common ear, but die-hard underground maniacs will eat this up with intoxicating pleasure. The rhythm guitars are layered so thick that on several occasions they drown out the kick drum lurking beneath. Together with the cavernous bass, they swallow everything in their path like a plague upon the Vatican. Vocals are more akin to black metal in their execution - demented reptilian howls with a pleasant amount of reverb that will make your skin crawl. The wall of noise created on this recording may be difficult to digest for people accustomed to a studio quality sound, but the stripped down production of this album suits the music beautifully. It's sad knowing that Feretrum would later abandon death metal altogether and pursue grindcore before their ultimate break-up in the mid 1990's. Perhaps someday this forgotten gem will be re-released and get the proper recognition it deserves. |
